Ulrict Little, a.k.a. Bigg Redd, Owner of Bigg Redd's Barbershop

Ulrict Little grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. He has worked as a professional barber for 20 years, and has worked at Bigg Redd's Barbershop in the Northside since 2011. Originally Harris Barbershop, Little inherited the shop that has been passed down through three generations of barbers. Ulrict spoke with us about the history of his shop and how the area and individuals have been impacted by gentrification.

Matt Keen, Owner of Gravity Records
 

Matt Keen was born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. He opened Gravity Records in 2004. Originally located on Kerr Avenue, Keen moved Gravity Records to Castle Street in 2013 due to expansions near the original shop. Matt sat down with us to talk about how he has experienced the development and gentrification around his store on Castle St.

Originally from Oregon, Kelly Kenoyer has been a reporter for five years. She transitioned from print to radio journalism throughout her career. Kelly has studied and investigated the history and evolution of Wilmington's land use development, with a focus on the history of gentrification in Wilmington's Northside. Kelly worked with us to discuss gentrification and other developmental practices on the policy level.

Cierra Washington, Northside Food Co-op

Cierra Washington currently serves as the Project Manager of the Northside Food Co-op. Cierra started working with the Co-op full time in May of 2020. Cierra spoke with us about the importance of access to nutritious produce, the Northside as a food desert, and the role that gentrification plays in having access to "healthy, nutritious and affordable food."
